How to Organize Bathing Suits

Updated: Mar 18, 2021

Bathing suits deserve proper treatment, love and a good home. These are delicates and they should be treated delicately. If you’re like me, you have a lot of bathing suits and lots you don't wear. You probably have one go to swimsuit? Ha! Some of us only break out bikinis during the warmer season or if it’s vacation time. How you organize your swimwear when you're not using them is key to keeping their shape and form.

Let's not ball up our bathing suits and squish them in our dresser drawers or stuff them in bags. As a self proclaimed easy going neat freak, I have two methods that keep bathing suits organized and well cared for, while they may or may not ever be used.

Here's two ways to organize swimsuits:

How to organize bathing suits: Decorative Box Method

The first step in organizing bathing suits is to neatly fold your tops and bottoms. If you’re not folding bikinis and it’s a one piece, the same applies. It doesn't have to be perfect, just neat enough for storage purposes. Grab a decorative storage box that speaks to you or make your own. I found this one from Michaels. Place your folded swimsuits neatly in your box and you’re done, that’s it. Depending on how often you access your swimsuits will determine where to store your box. If you're from Southern California and you go to the beach a lot (even in the “Fall”), you want your box to be easily accessible. If you live in New York, storing your swimsuits on the shelf would make the most sense since you most likely won’t be accessing them other than the summer time and maybe vacations.

I had some extra space in a dresser drawer, so I placed mine there. If you have a lot of pieces, get a larger box or try using multiple boxes to organize your bathing suits. I love these because you can display them as decor in a room. If you have a lot of dresser space, you can also organize your swimwear straight into the drawer itself. The container store has fabulous drawer organizers perfect for storing your swimsuits.

How to organize bathing suits: Hanging Method

Ideally I like hanging bathing suits so I can admire them when I'm in my closet but in my experience this is best when you've got the space. Start organizing bathing suits by gathering them and taking inventory on what you have and like. If it’s a swimsuit you're not in love with, why hang it? It’s only going to take up space. Select your favorite pieces and divide them from one pieces to two pieces. Invest in some swimwear hangers. There are hangers dedicated for bikinis and one pieces. Once you have your favorite swimsuits, place them on the hangers and hang them in your closet in a dedicated area. Take into consideration the fabric and design of your pieces. Are there embellishments? Strings? This is important because where you hang your swimsuits is crucial. You want to carve out a section specifically for swimwear so the zipper on your jacket doesn't accidentally get snagged on to your bikini top and ruin your beautiful piece. Remember if you’re constantly grabbing swimwear, store them in an accessible place in your closet. If you’re not working with a lot of closet space and you can’t dedicate a section to swimwear, either refer to method one or ensure the surrounding clothes will not damage your beautiful items.
